About the Job

In this role, you will take on large challenges subsystems like color, layout, or typography and seek out capabilities that are simultaneously powerful yet easy to use. You work with User Experiences to advocate for users, from product designers and developers to consumers of Google’s products.

User experience is at the forefront of how we create intuitive, innovative, and beautiful products that people love. We strive to learn and understand our users’ needs, behaviors, and emotions to gather insights that inform product strategy and design. Our UX teams include designers, researchers, content strategists, and engineers who are passionate about quality, usability, and simplicity. We work on collaborative teams to solve complex challenges and craft experiences that highlight our products’ unique capabilities and personalities. Our work touches billions while exemplifying a key principle that is core to Google’s philosophy: “Focus on the user and all else will follow.”

Responsibilities

  • Create a robust, coherent, useful, and usable design system that meets the needs of third-party and first-party products, across a variety of devices and brand needs.
  • Provide a system design perspective, crafting durable frameworks, and mental models which improve the quality of a wide range of user journeys.
  • Design for the changing needs of our users while identifying unnecessary complexity within the design system.
  • Collaborate within a cross-functional product development team to present ideas and designs, partnering with engineering to implement, writers and editors to author and revise content, and researchers to validate design decisions.
  • Work to present and advocate for the Material Design system, providing feedback, promoting standards, and integrating changes into the design guidance.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a UX-related field (e.g., human-computer interaction, human factors, behavioral research, graphic design, etc.) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience in Interaction Design.
  • Experience designing across multiple platforms, and working with technical/design teams to create user flows, wireframes, and building user interface mockups and prototypes.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with large-scale system design.
  • Experience working with researchers.
  • Familiarity with user research methods.
